Seminariet äger rum fredag den 16 november 2018, kl 14-15. OBS! I sal U32, Frescati Hagväg 8, plan 3.

Abstract

In this talk, I will address and discuss a question of how people deal with ingroup moral violations. More specifically, I will discuss two psychological pathways: the moral disengagement path characterized by denial, outgroup dehumanization and moral exclusion and the moral engagement path characterized by responsibility acceptance, moral emotions and moral inclusion of the others.

The main question of this talk will be discussed in the light of experimental and field evidence from several (post)conflict societies including contexts of past (such as the Balkans) and ongoing (the Middle East) collective violence.

Upon providing further confirmatory evidence on the expected pathway of moral disengagement, I will present some experimental evidence indicating possible processes and mechanism of moral engagement with collective wrongdoings such as positive affirmation of individual (vs. social) identities and its effects on moral emotions.

Related to this, I will also present data demonstrating some contradictory implications of  moral emotions of guilt and shame emotions for intergroup reconciliation processes.

Avdelningen för personlighets-, social och utvecklingspsykologi ansvarar för dagens extra seminarium.
