Seminariet äger rum onsdag den 19 februari 2020, kl. 14-15 i konferensrum 357, Frescati Hagväg 14, plan 3.

Abstract

The aim of this presentation is to is to provide an overview analysis of the socio-historical context of Swedish preschool and to examine reasons for a lack of interest in evidence-based practices for preschool services.

In this context, we conducted the first randomized controlled trial (RCT) intervention study in Swedish preschool in 2014-2018. The RCT study evaluated an enhanced version of a well-established group-based learning strategy in 8 of the randomized units, to be compared with a contrasting individualized attention-training intervention in 10 units and 10 control group units. We found no significant effects of either interventions.

The presentation for this seminar will discuss the conditions of bi-directional collaboration between researchers from different disciplines, but also the reception of the study by participating educators based on focus-group interviews.

The discussion will touch upon i) how ECE practices have shifted from relying on psychological knowledge to exclusively build their practices on sociocultural, sociological, social constructionist and critical theories; ii) that educators appreciated the insights from psychological findings when enacted in the two interventions. Educators testified to the importance of the researcher-stakeholder bidirectional engagements and the rigorous research ethics in the implementation of the RCT design. Despite the null-results, the intervention research had reported (from the municipality) positive learning effects on educator attitudes on child development and learning, with potential of enhancing preschool-didactics and the quality of services.
