Our research focuses on the contexts of working individuals: in groups, in the organization, and in relation to different constellations and roles in society. The balance and interplay between paid work and the rest of life has an important place in our research as well as stress and health, personal and occupational development, and the individual’s position in the labor market. Among the work environmental factors, special attention is given to organizational and technical changes, new organization and employment types, new reward systems, and work flexibility.

As educators a great deal of effort goes into our Study program focusing on personnel, work, and the organization (180 credits), as well as its advanced-level continuation, Master’s program focusing on personnel, work, and the organization (120 credits). We are also involved in teaching the psychologist program, independent courses, and doctoral studies within the areas of work and organizational psychology as well as methods and statistics. Furthermore, we provide thesis advising for independent courses, the psychologist program, and the master’s program, and have many active doctoral students.

The chair in work and organizational psychology

Work and organizational psychology is one of the oldest and largest applied areas within psychology, both nationally and internationally. It has had a place within Stockholm University for over half a century and its history within Sweden is even longer. The chair in work and organizational psychology was established in 1976, and three different individuals have held the position over the years.

The earliest application of work psychology in Sweden was with the psychological testing that occurred in connection with personnel selection within the business and defense sectors. 

Sandviken’s Ironworks was started in 1928 and the National Railroad in 1934. In 1944 the national defense introduced a section for personnel testing that was succeeded by the Institute for Military Psychology in 1955. This institute as well as at the Swedish Council for Personnel Administration, founded in 1952 by the Swedish Employers’ Confederation, conducted research. 

Also of great importance for science-based psychology were the psycho-technical institutes in Stockholm and Gothenburg. The first professorship in the area was established at the Stockholm School of Economics in 1955. It was followed by professorships at most of the Swedish universities. The professorship at Stockholm University was established in 1976.  

Work and organizational psychology has had a central position within the Department of Psychology at Stockholm University for many years. The department’s first doctoral defense within the area of work and organizational psychology took place in 1956 with Kjell Härnqvist’s defense (see the gallery of doctoral dissertations).

Research on work and organizational psychology at the department was strengthened in 1976 in connection with establishing the professorship. The professorship has been held by the following individuals:

Gunn Johansson, Professor of Work Psychology (1989-2006)
Magnus Sverke, Professor of Work and Organizational Psychology (2006- )
