Abstract

Attachment theory, first devised by John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth, to explain human infants’ patterns of emotional attachment to caregivers, was extended during the 1980s and '90s to emotional attachments in adolescent and adult romantic relationships, and then to attachment processes of other kinds (e.g., to a therapist, to God, to pets) and in other kinds of relationships – for example, in groups and larger organizations. Dr. Shaver, recipient of an honorary doctorate in the social sciences from Stockholm University, will explain how he and his colleagues and students helped to create this area of research and explore many of its fascinating avenues during the past 30 years.
